How do I figure the lighting for my camera?

I have a Sony Cybershot, and I’ve had it for quite sometime now; I love the camera. The thing I’m having a problem with is lighting. I cant seem to figure the proper functions whenever I’m using it for instance inside the house. What’s the difference between slow and fast flash? And depending on the lighting, what function do i put it on? I’ve read the manual but cant seem to figure it out.
