Do wicks ever need replacing in kerosene lamps?

I have stored several kerosene lamps and lanterns for about 30 years — firing them up when electrical outage occurs. Last week I lit three lanterns, but they had weak, rather red flames — not bright yellow. Do I need to replace the wicks?
