corey w asked:

I have a 46 gallon bow front salt water tank. The lights i have on it are a Coral Life light (1/2 actinic) and the standard lousy one that comes with most tanks. I have some mushrooms and zooanthids that are doing fine, but I want better lighting so they will grow / spread faster.

Ideas for the best lighting for my kitchen?

Wednesday, May 26th, 2010
Cathy asked:

I have a dark kitchen with one small light fixture. My kitchen is not that big and does not have alot of natural light. It has only one small window. What is the best lighting to brighten it up? I have heard Flourescent is the best but I thought that it was ugly and old fashioned. It’s only a small kitchen. Any ideas? I need something to throw out a lot of light. Is it better to get one long light fixture?

Lighting for photography - What are the difference between this three?

Sunday, May 23rd, 2010
flare_78942 asked:

I need to know what is the difference between power pack strobes, monolights, and continous lighting equipment. I also need to know what are the advantages? Disadvantages? And possible uses for each besides the obvious of “lighting?” I hope that makes sense. I just think that each lighting equipment is used to photograph particular things.

How can create good lighting to take indoor pictures?

Saturday, May 15th, 2010
simple asked:

I need to take pictures of merchandise to sell online so a bright atmosphere is important to capture the correct colors to display. I don’t want to do it outdoors due to all the neighbors and lack of privacy. My lighting isn’t so bright inside. What can I do to create better lighting? My regular lamp doesn’t seem to do the trick.
These are really great items and ideas - thank you. I need something rather large, for selling full length dresses. But the tent thing is cool, i never thought of stuff like that.

What Are LED Lights?

Wednesday, May 12th, 2010
Reshma asked:

Light emitting diodes or LED lights are an energy efficient lighting solution. Unlike the conventional lights which use filaments, the LED lights are solid state bulbs. The light is emitted when a semiconductor diode is charged. The charge from the diode makes the electrons combine with the hole thereby releasing energy in the form of light. The diodes are very small in size and are integrated with other optical components to obtain the light and reflection that is required for illumination.

LED lights have become very popular because of the various advantages it offers. They emit light immediately upon switching on unlike the halogen or krypton gas bulbs. LED lights consume less power and the savings in power can be up to 20% compared to conventional lights. This feature is beneficial for lighting up commercial spaces where large numbers of lights are required. Usage of LED lights in such cases will result in huge power savings. The heat emission from LED lights is almost nil. This makes it the right choice for lighting up areas where heat emission is not desirable like children’s play area.

Compared to a conventional light, the LED light lasts about four times longer. When the longer life is combined with the savings in power, the usage of LED lights proves to be very beneficial for the user. Also, there is no hassle of frequent replacements since the life of LED lights are not affected with heat emitted by them. The life of a conventional light comes down drastically because of the heat emitted by the bulb itself. LED lights are also more robust than their conventional counterparts. Because of their solid state nature, the LED lights can sustain external shocks without damage.

They are used for a wide range of purposes. In commercial spaces, the LED lights are used for advertising. Because of their bright lighting, the LED lights are capable of catching the eye attention quickly. At homes, they are used to light driveways, porches and rooms. They are used widely for decorative purposes such as lighting Christmas trees and providing illumination for parties. LED lights are also catching up with replacing the conventional lights for automobiles. They are being extensively used as indicators and tail lights in cars and other vehicles.  They can also be seen being used in traffic signals.

LED lights are environment friendly lights. Global warming is a serious concern today and with the low heat emission technology, LED lights contributes towards keeping the atmosphere cool. Since they use lesser power, extensive usage of LED lights can go a long way in conserving the depleting natural energy resources. They also do not contain toxic mercury unlike fluorescent lights. Another efficient feature of LED lights is that they can emit light of desired color without using a light filter. This features enables in wasting no energy whatsoever in the conversion.

LED lights come with an initial high investment cost. However, with the longer life and the power savings that they offer, this initial cost does not work out to be a disadvantage. A simple math will tell you that the ownership cost of LED lights is much less that an incandescent light or a fluorescent light. They work with 12V or 24 V power which means they can run on battery power as well. An efficient way to complement the environment friendly features of the LED lights is to run it on solar power.

Owing to the many advantages that LED lights possess, they are increasingly being used in various applications. They are also used in many temporary applications such as light art and glow sticks because of the relative cheapness that low output LED lights offer.

Seasonal Depression and Light Therapy

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010
Light therapy asked:

At the beginning of the 1980’s in the United States Professor Rosenthal discovered the benefits of light therapy lamps.  At first they were used in cases of seasonal depression also called SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).  Light therapy is today practised in a number of hospitals a number of pathologies, but mostly with trouble linked to the upset of the biological clock (circadian rhythm problems) like insomnia and generally trouble sleeping.

Light therapy reveals its effectiveness in numerous cases, and helps to quickly find energy when a lower morale lets us feel the changes in the seasons.

Light therapy lamps and seasonal depression or SAD.  The principal symptoms of winter season depression start to show at the end of summer when the days start to grow short and become dull as there is less light it is the seasonal change that affects a number of people.

In a number of cases it is Winter Blues which we all suffer from in one way or another, it is a simpler version of winter depression, and this in no way stops us from continuing with our daily lives.

In the cases of SAD people will suffer from a depressive state, tiredness and will have a tendancy to isolate themselves socially.  Also noticing a significant rise in their appetite with a tendancy to gain weight or even bulemia due to sweet foods, gloomy humour a tendancy of insomnia and an excessive need of sleep, loss of concentration and motivation with a loss of interest and a loss of out put.  The people suffering from seasonal depression do not automatically show symptoms, this is why it is important to contact a doctor for a check up.  The signs of this depression disappear with the arrival of beautiful days and sunlight.

Light therapy lamps : How does it work?

Light therapy consists of facing a light therapy lamp which transmits light to the eyes. The intensity of the light should be between 2500 and 10 000 lux (light units).  It is the retina via the neurotransmittors that inhibit the melatonin, a sleep hormone which is at the root of the problems linked to a loss of light.  This homone is normally secreted at night for us to sleep. The fact that this sleeping drug is naturally blocked during the day helps us to find out natural energy.

How to use the light therapy lamps

First you have to remember that light therapy lamps used as treatment in hospitals and at home respond in the same way as any normal medecine.  This is why you should verify that the lamps have an agreed EU license.

The origin of light therapy lamps are reserved for medical use (by a GP or at the hospital).  Today light therapy lamps may be used at home, at the office in response to normal usage.

The power will be the first factor in the choice of a lamp, of course the more powerful the lamp the more the use will be a greater comfort.

Each session should be done in the morning.  The user must place the lamp at eye height or just underneath the eyes.  It is not necessary to look at the lamp but it is important that the retina swims in the light coming from the light therapy.

The length of the session must be between 30 minutes and 2 hours (30 minutes at 10 000 lux or 2500 lux for 2 hours).

The effects on the morale can be felt quite quickly, from the first couple of days, but may take 10 days for others.

There are very little indications against light therapy but it is important to consult a doctor when the person suffers with their eyes or is taking photosensitive medication.
