The eye : window to the brain

“Contrary to what many people think the eye is not an external organ, but an extention of the brain” explains Dr Hébert.  All the plays between the two ears, but as it is extremely difficult to study the organ in vivo, the study of the eye is composed of an interesting window.

Light therapy

The downside of this is reflection from the flash and non-uniform lighting (bright in the middle, darker at the edges). We have those ‘energy efficient’ bulbs installed throughout our house, which produce just enough light to navigate in the dark (and probably save a whole 50 cents per month).

What can I do inexpensively to get better lighting so that I don’t have to use the flash? Higher watt bulbs? Spot lamp? What type of bulbs give better light; white, clear, flourescent? I’m using a Canon PowerShot A75 digital.
Natural sunlight isn’t a viable option because I do most (if not all) of my work in the late afternoon or early evening, when the sun is on the opposite side of our home’s larger windows.

I foolishly bought a pendant lamp with only a 100 watt halogen light bulb for my dining area. Now that I’ve decided to replace it with a bigger chandalier, how many watts of light should I be looking at? I do have a Lutron dimmer, so it’ll be adjustable. Is total wattage even what I should be looking at? Is there some other measurement to consider?

Because my dining room has a sloping roof, I can really only do a single chandalier or pendant lamp. A single pendant lamp will never be bright enough — so that’s out. Most chandaliers tend to have lamp shades that focus upwards, whereas I know lighting for a dining table should mostly focus downwards — to draw people into the dining area.

What are my options? For what it’s worth, I very much want a modern, contemporary design.
