Using Painted Lamp Shades For Rustic Home Decorating

Sunday, July 5th, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

Painted lamp shades are a must for rustic style decorating, or for use in any cabin, lodge, or ranch style home. The designer style they enhance in your home will have your friends talking about your great interior design long after they leave. In fact, I love these wonderful shades so much that I enjoy giving them as gifts for Christmas or birthdays. These lamp shades are an interesting way to bring out colorful southwestern or Native American style in your home decorating and create a look that is definitely one of a kind.

From elaborate portrayals of Native American Indians and beautiful mountain wildlife, to colorful paintings of dry desert settings and Indigenous homes, you will definitely be excited with how these hand crafted lamp shades complement your home’s Native American design and style. The thing I like most about decorating with painted lamp shades or giving them as gifts, are the variations in shade colors and options available.

You can find fascinating artwork on dyed pigskin suede lamp shades that come in many different colors, or find a painting you like on a natural rawhide shade in light or dark. No matter which you choose, you will definitely find one that matches your color palette and your decorating style. The fascinating handiwork of the hand-stitched leather on the rawhide lamp shade brings great character and true Native American design to your rustic cabin or country home.

Don’t have a mountain home to decorate? The nicest part about painted lamp shades is that they look just as well in all rooms of your home and wherever else you would like to incorporate western design. The exciting thing about painted lamp shades is that they are a relatively easy way to alter your lighting fixtures or redo a room without going into debt or remodeling. Try painted lamp shades on unique western style lamps such as wrought iron or antler lamps to create a true natural mountain look, or simply replace the shade on the regular style lamps that you are already using to create southwestern design.

Popular for use on floor lamps for lighting large rooms or for table lamps and desk lamps, painted lamp shades are perfect for using anywhere you would like to create a splash of color with western flare. You will be excited to see how easily a lamp shade can alter the look of the whole room and bring Native style decorating to life in your home. Use painted leather lamp shades with other western or Native American style items for true western design. Painted lamp shades look incredible when used with Native American blankets and throws, pueblo ladders, Native drums, or hand-made baskets and pottery.

These one of a kind shades are hard to buy in retail stores where western decorating items are sold, but you can find them online. If you love the Native style homes typical throughout the southwest, or simply want to add authentic rustic style to your decor, try decorating with the unique art of painted lamp shades.

Sunday, July 5th, 2009
J’aime Le Pois asked:

I am interested in making my own clocks, lamps and fountains from recycled materials, but want to know how to wire lamps, manipulate clock gears and hook up fountains. I know that you usually have to buy some of the gear, but how can you customize it (for instance, a clock face)? Where can I find more information and how-to guides on how to do this?

Antique Candle Stick Lamps

Saturday, July 4th, 2009
Maurice Robertson asked:

The candle stick to our grandparents and reaching back for generations in time was the standard method for the illumination of the interior.  They were produced in a wide range of materials, from inexpensive pottery to chased silver and gold.  Designs were multiple and much thought and care was given to their making.

Today, while many candle sticks lie forgotten and ignored, this romantic style of lighting is being revived by The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co!.  With their expert knowledge, candle sticks are transformed and reappear as objects of beauty and function.  It really is “new light on an old subject” with the exchange from wax to electricity!

The candle sticks, their candle cups now fitted with faux candles, retain their original look beautifully. Their usually slender form is fitted with a 25w globe and designed for a small sized lamp shade. They can look very much at home on a desk, hall table or side board, adding an elegant touch to a wide variety of interiors, including as pretty little bed side lamps.

The company is well known for their interior designer range of classic lighting.  Their lamps are entirely unique, designed in-house and bench made, with an on line catalogue of over one hundred lamps to choose from!

The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co currently have a choice range of candle stick lamps in polished brass, French and English, waxed English oak and a particularly charming Edwardian example of Chinoiserie decoration.

They also offer a hand made silk lampshade service to compliment.  The decorative potential of lamp shades should never be underestimated.  There are many ways of bringing colour into an interior and the use of coloured and patterned lampshades can make a bold contribution.

Unique Cane Furniture - Rattan Fibre Lamps

Friday, July 3rd, 2009
Gen Wright asked:

all kinds of home items made from rattan that are often overlooked by homeowners eager to redesign or refurnish their home. The more commonly seen pieces are the large items, like tables, chairs, etc. But there exist an entire array of home accessories that will help enhance the overall design of the house. These items are sometimes so rarely seen that they can be considered unique and exclusive. For example, do you know that they are a wide variety of lamps created from rattan? They are known as fibre lamps because they are made from cane fibre. Here are some sample items that you may want to add to your shopping list.

St Lucas Lamp.

The St Lucas Lamp is made with a combination of fibre and fruit skin. The color is a shiny reddish brown, and at a glance, one may mistake the material as expensive leather. Curvy patterns on the product allows light to shine through, which will cast beautiful patterns in the room.

Sonora Fiber Lamp.

The Sonora Fiber Lamp is available in 3 different sizes - small, medium, and large. It takes on the natural color of the fibre. The shortest stands at 37 inches, and the tallest stands at 49 inches. The size that you want depends on the area that you wish to lit up. You can set a small lamp on a table, or you can buy a large lamp and use it as a standalone light. The patterns are unique and exotic looking.

Oman Lamp.

The Oman Lamp is created with fibre and egg skin. The texture of the skin looks smooth and well polished. The patterns on the lamp is real egg skin. Guests will be puzzled over how this lamp is created. The egg shell is first cracked, and then mixed with cane fibre and special glue. The end result is that the skin is translucent enough to let light pass through to illuminate the surroundings.

Levice Fiber Lamp.

The Levice Fiber Lamp is made with similar materials as the Oman Lamp - fibre and egg skin. But this lamp is much bigger, and is rectangular in shape. The height ranges from 34 inches to 51 inches. This product looks best when it is set in a peaceful environment. Try placing one just outside the balcony.

Denver Fiber Lamp.

The Denver Fiber Lamp is made from fibre and banana leaves. It is shaped like a traditional lantern - oval in shape. You can set it on a table, or you can hang it up. The appearance of this lantern is enhanced by the natural patterns of the banana leaves.

Clemente Fiber Lamp.

The Clemente Fiber Lamp is created solely with cane fibre. The product is beautified with bright colored flowers on the skin. The bright patterns make this the perfect product for a child’s bedroom or playroom. It stands at 42 inches tall, so it’s still considered a relatively small lamp.

Rattan lamps come in a wide variety of shapes and designs. They are affordable, and you can easily find something that suits your needs and personal tastes. Don’t underestimate the ability of these little items to enhance the overall design. They will light up the whole place for you, leaving you with a warm and fuzzy feeling!

Antique Lamps - Outstandingly Rare Minton Lamps

Thursday, July 2nd, 2009
Maurice Robertson asked:

In 1793, Thomas Minton, now a master potter having just finished his apprenticeship with Josiah Spode as a copper plate engraver, opened his small Staffordshire pottery at Stoke-on Trent, the very heart of the English ceramic industry.  This small beginning was to grow into a major ceramic manufacturing company with an international reputation.

Everyone knows of the famous “Willow” pattern, but did you know that Thomas Minton is regarded as the one who first engraved this well known print!  Minton is said to have been inspired on hearing the old Chinese legend of the rich Mandarin’s young daughter eloping with his secretary.  As the pattern shows, the young lovers are pursued by the enraged father, however, the goddess of mercy, seeing the drama, turns the fleeing couple into swallows who fly away together.

Thomas Minton’s son, Herbert, (1793–1858), succeeded his father as head of the firm and to him was due its development and reputation as a leader of porcelain production.

In the 1820’s he started production of bone china.  This early Minton is regarded as comparable to French Sèvres, by which it was greatly influenced.

Our Minton lamps shown were made in 1863 and are typical of the very high standards reached by this time.

An extremely rare pair of 19th century, English Minton vases as table

lamps. The lamps imitating the design of oriental water jars.

The lamps glazed in an even pale celadon with moulded and applied white porcelain “rope”. The necks of the lamps with a continuous band of open cut-work in the style of traditional Chinese window screens,

the lamp necks designed to allow the celadon glazed porcelain

to be viewed through the screens!

The lamps skilfully modelled to appear as if tied in white knotted rope.

The bases of the lamps with a continuous band of scrolling cut-work,

with evenly spaced round headed pegs as ties for the rope.

The lamps with gilded, turned, solid bronze bases and caps.

This stunning pair of lamps, the quality of which is self evident,

are in remarkable condition considering the complexity of the design.

In private correspondence with the UK Wedgwood/Minton museum, this

pair of lamps were described as “highly important”.

The shape was exhibited by Minton at the 1862 London International Exhibition where they were described as “a pair of vases, glazed celadon ground, rope festoons in white, perforated neck and perforated foot”.

The vase shape was registered in 1863 as “in the Chinese style”.

Overall height (including shades)   25\”/63cm
