is it hard to convert American halogen standing lamps for use in Australia (different voltage)?

Friday, June 26th, 2009
k9 asked:

we’d like to buy up several premium standing lamps in NY before returning to Australia. We would get them changed professionally but don’t even know if it is possible.
Presumably standard bulb lights would be easy

Antique Lamps in Chinese Cinnabar

Friday, June 26th, 2009
Maurice Robertson asked:

The long history of Chinese culture has produced a great number of original and distinctive artistic styles.  One of these is “Cinnabar Lacquerware”.  Quickly recognised by its distinctive red colour and sometimes referred to as “China Red”. This treatment has been used artistically in China for over 1000 years.

Lacquerware refers to any facade which has been coated with lacquer, resulting in a hard, durable surface.  The natural source of lacquer is a tree, the Lac, or, varnish tree, the sap of which is collected in the same manner as rubber tree sap; small cuts made into the trunk of the tree and the sap collected.  The name “Cinnabar”, however, is derived from a natural red mineral pigment which is blended with the Lac tree sap after which a rich red lacquer is produced

The initial stage in the production of cinnabar lacquer ware begins with the first coat of red lacquer; this first coat can be the first of literally hundreds of coats to follow!  Each coat is given time to dry before the next, until the desired thickness of red lacquer is achieved.

The second stage in this long process is the deeply carved ornate decoration.

This is left to the hands of a highly skilled carver, who, with razor sharp carving tools begins the slow process of intricately carving the now hard layer of red lacquer..

The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co currently include in their collection, a fine pair of 19th century Chinese cinnabar table lamps.

Antique and decorative arts take many forms and are developed to enhance and beautify our lives.

Remember, that red is the color that we pay the most attention to. It is the warmest and most energetic color in the spectrum. In China, red symbolizes celebration and luck, used in many cultural ceremonies, New Year, weddings and birthdays.

In interior design, red is usually used as an accent and lamps are the most practical of all accents.  Decorators say that red furniture should be perfect, since it will attract attention! A colour you just can’t miss.

The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co specialise in antique table lamp lighting with an on-line range of over 100 unique, antique and vintage lamps on view.

Can you suggest me where to find a lamp which could take 100W to 300W lamps?

Thursday, June 25th, 2009
quest asked:

I am trying to use high wattage bulbs to light up my room for photography and don’t have space for the photography lamps etc. I want to use regular household lamps and use them to light up with high wattage bulbs when needed and low wattage bulbs when not needed.

Can someone suggest where to find (and which ones) a lamp which can take 100-300 watt bulb. Right now, my lamp has a warning, not to use any bulb rated more than 60W.

Thanks.

The Way To Properly Measure Rawhide Lamp Shades

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

What in the world are you talking about? That might be the question that comes to mind when ordering western rawhide lamp shades or replacement lamp shades. It can be extremely exasperating because various people fit lampshades by different standards.

The whole ordering process is compounded by telephone discussions and internet ordering. If you realize how you should measure a shade to get the proper fit and also communicate the right size, you’re going to prevent problems and receive the lamp shade you are expecting.

If the shade is rawhide or not isn’t important, there are important tips you should use to correctly measure and order a shade and also the proper description that will allow you to insure that the person receiving your order is on the same track.

We fabricate custom rawhide lamp shades for rustic western lamps and southwestern home furnishings. Because we encounter this situation all the time we have some tips that anyone can use to insure the right look for a lamp, even without seeing the lamp and shade and lamp together.

The right way to measure:

1. You will need to have three different measurements, bottom diameter, top diameter and height. The bottom diameter is always measured across the bottom of the lamp shade. The top diameter is measured across the top opening of the shade. The height of a lampshade should be measured straight up and down vertically, not along the slant.

At this point is where the challenge starts. When relaying the measurements various individuals and companies will use the three dimensions in various order, it’s not uniform, so be careful that you are not confusing the bottom and height measurements for example.

2. The height has to be measured straight up and down, but some stores will measure along the slant. These two measurements can vary or be quite different and may make the finished shade to be distorted if confused. Be sure to make clear how the height has been measured. We have noticed that many people that measure the slant rather than the shade height refer to it as the lampshade length rather than height.

A Good Tip On Height Measurement:

The reason you should measure height up and down, vertically, is that the height measurement of your lamp from bulb socket base to top of harp is always the minimum vertical height you will want to cover the electrical parts with the shade.

A Good Adjusting Height Tip:

When considering a stock replacement shade, the lamp’s overall height and look can be adjusted. The wire harp that holds the shade in position above the bulb is simple to replace. That can be great news when a standard shade is too short to look right. In place of having to order a custom shade you are able to change the harp that can make the shade to sit lower on the lamp to give you the desired look.

Lampshade Mounting Type:

The most common shade mount has a center bar across the top with a center hole for the harp mount or a washer centered by three supports that attach to the top rim of the shade. Both types allow the shade to be secured to the harp. Some small lamps and chandeliers don’t use a harp but rather use a bulb clip adapter to attach directly to the bulb. A bulb clip is simply two wire loops that are attached to the shade’s center bar and grip the bulb.

It’s easy to add a clip to any regular shade to allow it to be placed over the bulb. Chandelier lamp shades almost always have built-in bulb clips made for the small flame or candelabra type bulbs. Lamp shades used as hanging lamps can use an uno mount which has a center ring large enough for the bulb socket to pass through. These also are used on some table lamps. You can use a bulb clip on a replacement shade instead of an uno mount.

You will find these tips useful on your future rawhide lamp shade or replacement lampshade project and you will certainly to measure, order and receive the right size lamp shade the without any trouble for fabric or rawhide lamp shades.

Antique Lamps and the Colours of Canton

Monday, June 22nd, 2009
Maurice Robertson asked:

The Antique and Vintage Table Lamp Co are renowned for their range of antique decorative lighting.  Table lamps for interior lighting have been used for the past 120 years; in fact, the first light bulb was produced in the 1870’s.

Antique lamps have several distinct advantages to offer as each lamp is an original, produced as a “one off” with no element of mass production.  The company’s lamps share, with antiques in general, the advantage of improving in value over time.

The use of antique lighting adds an element of uniqueness to an interior and can be used as bed side lamps, desk lamps, reading lamps, or, simply placed as a decorative lighting element in illuminating a room.

The company’s range of lamps includes a number of 19th century Chinese export lamps.  Here indeed is “a rose by many names”.  These export porcelains are also known as Famille Rose, Rose Medallion, Canton export and Mandarin to name just a few!

These Famille Rose lamps were made at the great kilns of Jingdezhen and sent to the South of China, to the export port of Canton; here they were decorated in the bright palette of coloured enamels, which today is generally known as Chinese Export.  These brightly enamelled porcelains are full of colour and decorated with vigorous scenes of figures in tea houses, the Imperial court and domestic every day life.

Remember also, The Antique & Vintage Table Lamp Co is celebrated for its exquisite, handmade silk lampshades in all styles, knife or box pleated, gathered, ruffled or plain.  Sconce shades can also be ordered.

What You Need to Know About Salt Lamps

Sunday, June 21st, 2009
Ernesto Gaglione asked:

If someone were to tell you that they could clean your house by using a salt lamp, you would probably think that they were crazy, however should you decide to give them a chance to explain themselves, you would discover how clean your home’s air can be with the help of a Himalayan salt crystal lamp.

What is a salt lamp anyway? With numerous lamps in the house, do you still need more illumination? Also, from the look and appearance of this salt lamp, you would wonder how a chunk of salt would affect your home decor. However, a salt lamp may be the most important lamp you can have in the home. Why is this so? A salt lamp promotes the health and wellness of everybody living in the household; it is recognized for its air-cleansing ability aside from its aesthetics.

A salt lamp is a natural chunk of salt rock taken from the mines found in the foothills of the Himalayan Mountains. Since the salt mines have been in existence for millions of years, they have gathered many minerals within their salt supply. Therefore, a piece of salt rock from these mines also contains the minerals of the earth that have accumulated for millennia, minerals which are effective in helping to ionize the air.

The chunk of salt is shaped, mounted to a wooden base, and drilled to form a hole that can accommodate a candle or a light bulb. It is made available in different sizes and shapes to give variety to the user. When used, the heat that is emitted by the bulb or by the flame makes the salt lamp emit ions that are negatively charged. These negative ions then help produce cleaner air.

How can the salt lamp actually do this? The air is composed of many elements. These elements include ions which are pollutants such as dust particles that are not easily seen by the naked eye. Pollutants make up most of the air particles and they are also positively charged ions. The action of the salt lamp is to neutralize these positive ions through emitting negative ions. When this happens, the neutralized substances get heavy and ultimately fall, eliminating them from the normal air circulation, thereby eliminating pollution. Electronic devices used at home also produce electro-smog which can affect the concentration as well as the breathing of individuals. Ironically, many mechanical air ionizers that are meant to clean the air actually produce pollution of their own. With a salt lamp, this electro-smog is significantly repressed; in fact, the salt lamp helps eliminate electro-smog of other devices in the home such as personal computers.

Salt lamps will not only complement the natural look of your home but they will also encourage health and wellness through a clean environment. Also, a salt lamp not only enhances the health of an individual, but it also helps in keeping other ailments and allergies at bay. For an inexpensive and easy way of boosting the health of your family, try lighting a salt lamp.
