Buying an Antique Floor Lamp Vs. More Contemporary Ones

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Ann Triune asked:

An antique floor lamp is a conversational piece, in its own right. Having one at home is sure to entice your houseguests into an animated discussion about its intricate design, history, and romantic elegance. Its brass finish, stained-glass lampshades, and intricate designs are enough to lure anyone into delightful conversation.

In buying a floor lamp, one of the first challenges you are faced with is to figure out what type of floor lamp you will need - an antique floor lamp or a floor lamp with more modern styles.

Having an antique floor lamp as opposed to more modern ones has its corresponding advantages and disadvantages.

First of all, there is always a touch of class and elegance brought upon by an antique piece, in this case an antique floor lamp. Its mystery and unknown past is always very appealing, and could serve as an enchanting conversation topic when friends, family, and guests visit.

However, genuine antique floor lamps are very hard to find, and are therefore very costly. In fact, in some auctions, French antique lamps could sell for up to a thousand dollars and more. That is why today manufacturers seek to mimic the antique look by making use of gilded bases, ornate cloths, and stained-glass lampshades. The color or hue of finish is also imitated to reflect the antique look.

Also, an antique floor lamp is rarely chosen for the purpose of illuminating a room. It focuses more on aesthetics rather than function. In order to make your antique floor lamp more functional and a lot safer, you can take it to an electrician for restoration. If you want to do this yourself, all you have to do is replace the electrical workings with contemporary and more modern parts. You can convert a vintage floor lamp into a compressed fluorescent or halogen floor lamp. Through this method, you can enjoy the elegance of antique design, and at the same time the benefits of modern lighting.

Aside from rewiring the old floor lamp, you should also make sure that the base is stable. Nowadays, floor lamps have to meet UL standards, where the bases are heavier, so that it won’t easily tip over. However, ages ago, antique floor lamps do not have a standardized base that can’t easily be tipped over. Accidental tipping over of floor lamps can lead to unwanted fire accidents. That is why it is very important to check whether the antique floor lamp you plan to buy is safe in terms of its structure.

Overall, having an antique floor lamp has its own advantages, in the sense that it provides a touch of romance, class, and sophistication to any home. However, aside from it being very expensive, it does not provide adequate lighting and is primarily used for aesthetic purposes only, instead of functionality. So, in buying a floor lamp, ask yourself what you need it for. If you’re not much concerned with lighting, and are more inclined towards having one for ornamental reasons, then you should go for an antique floor lamp. Just make sure you reinforce it with modern wiring so that it is safe to use.

Antler Lamps Add Elegant Rustic Style To Your Home Decor

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

Use antler lamps to add true rustic charm in your home decorating. Much more than average home lighting, antler lamps bring character to your home. If you live in a mountain cabin or western style home, the elegant appeal of antlers with their beautiful shapes and variety of natural color will give your area the unique rustic feel you are hoping to create.

Ranch owners as well as those constructing modern log homes have chosen antler lamps for years as the ideal rustic lighting to accompany their western home look. Because of the natural design of antler lamps and chandeliers there is a natural charm in the antlers themselves that wonderfully accompanies any form of southwestern furniture. There is something special about antler lamps that ties in every element and gives off a sophisticated country feel within the room. Antler lamps have a unique quality about them that easily adds rustic beauty in any environment.

Antler lamps also accompany many other western accessories in home decorating. In the Northwest or “north woods” antlers may be put on snow shoes and complimented with rawhide lamp shades to fashion unique wall sconces. The light colored wood and rawhide lacing of the snow shoe, together with the leather binding and warm glow of the hand stitched shade, make it a perfect combination. Weather you decide to adorn your antler lamp with southwestern light rawhide shades or country style dark rawhide lampshades, the option is yours and the outcome will be fabulous.

Smaller antler chandeliers are sometimes made from whitetail deer antlers while large chandeliers sometimes have several tiers of huge elk antlers. Weather your home is large or small an antler chandelier will bring the old west home.

In a small town in Wyoming, the town square is adorned with arches created from Elk antlers. It is definitely unique and you can achieve the same spirit with antler lamps. Small lamps are fashioned from whitetail deer antlers while large chandeliers may have tiers of elk antlers with rawhide lampshades. One of the most distinguishable lamps is created with moose antlers, recognizable with their great dark palms and beautiful dark rawhide lamp shades.

Every year, organizations like the Boy Scouts will search for the prized sheds. If you ever discover antler sheds outdoors, it is an incredible occurrence. Antler lamps enhance that same look in your home and can alter your home’s ambiance in a unique way.

Antlers are found in different conditions that are graded like rare coins. The best quality is awarded an “A” grade. The grading scale, indirectly, has to do with the length of time the sheds lie exposed before they are found. The longer they are left in the wild, the more they deteriorate. New antler sheds will be dark brown in color. Sheds that are not found soon will begin to fade in the sun until they are a chalky white. Another reason they loose their value is because of chew marks from small animals and stains from wet ground or moss.

There are also varying techniques for making the antler lamps themselves. Some lamp makers use glue to hold the antlers together. Others may join them together with rawhide lacing for a western look. And some of the most appealing antler lamps may include a combination of glue, screws and lacing, with the holes closed up for a natural look. High end lamps will almost always use rawhide lamp shades.

Each antler is a little varied than any other, so each antler lamp is unique and is absolutely fabulous for rustic lighting. Give antler lamps with rawhide lamp shades a place in your home decorating and you will love the results.

Rawhide Lamp Shades & Antler Chandeliers

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

It just needed rawhide lamp shades. Sometimes you just can’t see it, you know what I mean? A friend who just bought a beautiful log home had a problem because he said we wasn’t much of a designer and didn’t know what to do next. Have you ever experienced that? I sure have. Sometimes when we are involved in a project we are so close to it that we can’t see the obvious. It’s times like these when we need a fresh perspective.

A friend or family member might be able to look at our circumstances objectively and see the solution right away. Well that was the case with my friend. He had just purchased this beautiful home in the mountains. It was fabulous with large wood beams and a stone fireplace. The kind of place that anyone would love to decorate but it was just sort of plain. Even though it had large antler chandeliers it was just sort of dull and lifeless.

Immediately it was apparent that he needed rawhide lamp shades on the chandeliers to add warmth, color and a nice glow. All of a sudden the room came to life. The formerly bare antlers were bathed in rich golden light and the room took on an inviting feel.

For a cabin or log home, there is probably no better accessory than antler lamps with rawhide lamp shades. It doesn’t matter if you love the southwest styles or the heavy dark masculine western look, rawhide shades on antler chandeliers and lamps will bring in the rick rustic lighting you need. The beautiful shapes and textures of antlers and the hand stitching on the stretched rawhide lamp shades will deliver the look and feel you are after.

You don’t have to travel far in Montana or Wyoming to find beautiful ranches and to realize that antler lighting is magical and that there just isn’t any substitute for leather lamp shades. If you have a log home or even if you just want to bring the rustic mountain lodge look into you family room or den start with rustic lamps and shades and you will be amazed at the affect it has.

There is a balance that is created by using rawhide lamp shades throughout your room. It’s hard to explain but when you see it you can actually feel it. The warm glow from rawhide lampshades on chandeliers and floor and table lamps, or a small desk lamp just tie the room together and bring a sense of unity and also harmony with nature. Because the elements of real deer antlers or moose antlers along with the handcrafted character of rawhide lamp shades the room is drawn together.

You will undoubtedly like the look of rawhide shades on antler wall sconces and small candelabra type lamps. You can also use ideas from the rich north woods style to accent your lighting. Try a pair of snow shoe sconces with rawhide shades.

The light tone of the wooden frame and the leather lacing of the shoe along with the leather binding compliment the hand lacing on the lamp shade and its warm glow make a perfect harmony. Weather you prefer to compliment your antler lamps and chandeliers with southwestern light rawhide shades or western style dark rawhide lampshades, both are perfect choices for rustic decorating.

Like my friend, if you are unsure of where to start in your special rustic space, you can begin with whitetail deer antler lamps. They are some of the most beautiful while also being some of the least expensive. Antler chandeliers are also made for whitetail antlers. In larger spaces antler chandeliers may have several tiers of huge elk antlers or moose antlers. Remember, it doesn’t matter if you space is large or small. You can use antler lighting with rawhide lamp shades or add them to your own rustic lamps to bring in the feel of the old west, and mountain cabin or a southwest adobe ranch.
