An Easy Way To Size Rawhide Lamp Shades Properly

Thursday, April 30th, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

Am I speaking a foreign language? That might be the question that occurs to you when ordering custom rawhide lamp shades or replacement lamp shades. It can be very exasperating because various people measure lampshades quite differently.

The whole ordering process is compounded by telephone discussions and web ordering. If you know how you can best measure a lamp shade to get the right fit and also communicate the proper size, you will avoid problems and receive the lamp shade you thought you would.

The type of material the shade is made of doesn’t matter, there are important tips you should understand to correctly measure and order a lamp shade and also the proper description that will help you insure that the specialist receiving your order is on the same track. We produce custom rawhide lamp shades for rustic western lamps and southwestern home decor. Because we come across this this problem nearly everyday we have some tips that we use to insure the proper look for a lamp, even without seeing the lamp and shade and lamp together.

How to measure:

1. You will need to have three exact measurements, the bottom diameter, top diameter and height. The bottom diameter is the measurement across the bottom of the lamp shade. The top diameter is always measured across the top opening of the shade. The height of a lampshade must be measured straight up and down vertically, never up the slant.

This is where the confusion can begin. When communicating the measurements various individuals and companies will use the three dimensions in various order, it’s not uniform, so be careful that you are not confusing the bottom and height measurements for example.

2. The height has to be measured straight up and down, but some companies will measure along the slant. These two measurements can vary or be quite different and may make the finished shade to be made wrong if confused. You should always explain how the height has been measured. It’s worth noting that most people who measure the slant rather than the shade height refer to it as the shade’s length rather than height.

vital Tip On Height Measurement:

The reason you must measure height up and down, vertically, is that the height measurement of your lamp from bulb socket base to top of harp is always the minimum vertical height you will want to cover the electrical parts with the shade.

vital Adjusting Height Tip:

When considering a stock replacement shade, the lamp’s overall height and look can be adjusted. The wire harp that holds the shade above the bulb is simple to replace. That is great news if a standard shade is say an inch to short. In stead of having to order a custom shade you could possibly change the harp causing the shade to sit lower on the lamp to give you the proper look.

lamp shade Mounting Type:

The standard shade mount has a center bar across the top with a hole for the harp mount or a washer centered by three supports that attach to the top rim of the shade. Both designs allow the shade to be secured to the harp. Some types of lamps and chandeliers don’t use a harp but rather use a bulb adapter clip to attach directly to the bulb. A bulb clip is simply two wire loops that are attached to the shade’s center bar and grip the bulb.

A bulb clip adapter can be added to any stock shade to allow it to be placed over the bulb. Chandelier lamp shades almost always have built-in bulb clips made for the small flame or candelabra type bulbs. Lamp shades used as hanging lamps can use an uno mount which has a center ring large enough for the bulb socket to pass through. These also appear on some table lamps. You can use a bulb clip on a replacement shade instead of an uno mount.

You find these tips useful on your future rawhide lamp shade or replacement lampshade project and you will certainly to measure, order and receive the right size lamp shade the without any trouble for fabric or rawhide lamp shades.

Do you know where to find unique types of lava lamps?

Monday, April 27th, 2009
ranchgoesoneverything79 asked:

I am trying to locate another copy of a lost lava lamp for my partner. Spencers used to sell it in the 80s or 90s. It has mushrooms engraved on it and plastic grass “growing” out of it. Any idea where I could look/shop to find another copy of this?

Decorating With Lamps 101

Friday, April 24th, 2009
Tameka Norris asked:

How important lamps are to the look and feel of a home can’t be overstated. While you may have designed and decorated your rooms with taste and care, you’ll find that the lighting will ultimately contribute to how the rooms are perceived by the others.

Choosing the right lamp for your home requires deliberation and knowledge about available options and features. Given the availability of various types of lamps and lighting options such as floor lamps, table lamps, down lighters, recessed lighting, reading lamps, wall lamps, hanging lamps, and chandeliers to name a few, this becomes even more important.

When selecting lamps you have to observe and decide what you need the lamps for. What kind of actions or tasks will be performed in a particular room and what kind of lighting should you provide so the tasks can be successfully completed? Will the room be adequately lighted by the lamp of interest? Do you need to draw attention to a particular design or object? What kind of mood do you want to create? Those are the type of questions you’ll have to answer before making a choice.

Generally lamps are used in three ways. They provide light to carry out certain tasks like reading, sewing, and cooking. Usually these type of lamps, which are typically called task lamps, need to be bright. Lamps also provide ambient light to rooms so that people can move and observe objects and other people. Ambient lamps also create a mood for the room. These lamps don’t need to be as bright as task lamps. Thirdly lamps can be used to draw attention to, or accent an area or object. These lamps known as accent lamps. But usually, in order to save space, most lamps can be multi-functional and used in all three ways mentioned above.

Options

We will now look at some of the lighting options available.

Floor lamps are great source of ambient light and can double as accent lamps as well. They can also light particular tasks if suitably placed. They come in a huge variety of brands, sizes, and styles. The important thing to consider when selecting a floor lamp is where you want to place it, the kind of light it will provide, and the amount of space it will take up.

Table Lamps have one feature that distinguishes them from other kinds of lamps; they are highly portable. Table lamps can function as task lamps, ambient lamps, and accenting lamps easily. They can also be used to add a touch of decorative flair, even when they are not used. Table lamps are generally adjustable and their shades too can be changed as required.

Hanging paper lanterns while extremely decorative and great on saving space, they may not suit all tastes. However, if you look hard enough and if you are determined enough you may find or create one that will suit the look and feel of your room. They are good for ambient lighting since they do not take up any floor space at all, they are great for places in the house where people congregate.

Wall lamps and conventional hanging lamps can be used for ambient lighting and for accenting. They can come in a great variety of types and can be made to suit any decorative styles you require. They too do not take up any floor space.

Most of the mentioned lamp types as well as those not mentioned can be made into decorative features by changing their shades, brightness, color and size. Lamp shades which can come in various styles ranging from time honored Tiffany to Mica to modern. You can assume these styles by changing their patterns, colors, and materials. Type of bulbs whether they be incandescent, fluorescent, or LED, can also have an effect on the lamps’ brightness, color, size and the energy consumption. You should also pay attention to the stands, and brackets in order get the best out of your lamps decoration wise.

In conclusion, when you select lamps you have to take into account your own lighting, decorating, and spatial requirements, and match them with available options to achieve the best results.

Rawhide Lamps Shades With Rustic Lamps Enhances Southwest Design

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009
Craig Chambers asked:

Rustic lamps with rawhide lamp shades are often found in log homes and in western interior design to enhance rustic furnishings and add true country design to any room. When visiting the southwestern states, you will no doubt come across the warm glow of rawhide lamp shades used as part of the interior design of many public places. Their rustic charm makes them a wonderful choice in western style design.

Lamp shades made of rawhide are easy to decorate with, and work well with almost any decorating style. These lamp shades are also available in multi-colors that make it possible for interior designers to match any color or theme. Add rawhide lamp shades to your interior design and you will no doubt be pleased with how well they compliment western design and rustic home furnishings.

The first thing you will need to decide when decorating with leather lamp shades is what their function and purpose will be in the room. Are they to be placed on tall floor lamps to light a large room, or on small desk lamps to illuminate a small corner? The idea is to purchase the correct shade size based on where and how you will be using it.

Rawhide also makes an excellent choice for western style antler lamps and chandeliers. From little chandelier lamp shades with built in bulb adaptors for candelabra bulbs or sconces to big table lamps or desk lamps, rawhide shades work wonderfully for southwestern style home lighting.

When illuminated, the leather shade not only adds great character to a room but also creates a warm and inviting living space. The natural hues of the leather when illuminated is what generate the inviting light. No matter where you decide to use a rustic lamp with a leather lamp shade, you will love the unique charm it creates in the room. If you are including a lamp in your interior design, choose a type and size that will be big enough to accommodate a bigger size shade and one that gives off enough light.

Rawhide Sconce lampshades also allow for good reading light and are made in just the right size for any type of lamp. Leather shades are great for decreasing the harsh glare of a light, and allow you to filter it to where you choose. Light colored rawhide, also called southwestern lamp shades, will let the maximum light shine through while dark rawhide shades, referred to as western lamp shades, are more subtle, producing a charcoal color when your lamp is on.

The greatest part about incorporating leather lamp shades in your interior design is that they are an easy way to introduce western charm and character into your home. Authentic antler lamps are a wonderful choice in home lighting fixtures because of the welcoming ambiance they generate when paired with a leather lamp shade. Heavy wrought iron lamps are also great southwestern style lamps to combine with rawhide shades. It is your rawhide shade that makes the rustic look and feel which is why professional decorators love using them.

Leather lamp shades come in a variety of sizes and colors, making it easy to buy the best size shade and color to complement your decorating style. Just as appropriate in the living room, family room or den as well as bedroom or study, rawhide shades can be placed in just one room or used to create a southwestern theme throughout your whole house.

The greatest thing about these shades is that you can buy many rawhide shades at reduced prices by shopping online. Decorating with rawhide in your home is an investment in tranquility and peace that you will welcome forever. If you like the rustic decorating style of the old west, or want to build your own year round Arizona room, you will love enhancing southwest decor with rawhide lamp shades.

Shopping Tips: Choosing Your Floor Lamp

Friday, April 17th, 2009
Lauren Tyler asked:

Before you buy a floor lamp there are certain things that you might want to keep in mind. First of all you need to know that floor lamps were considered to be more dangerous than other lamps until the last decade or so when technology and good design helped fix some of the problems that made this style of lamp flawed in the first place.

For instance, historically, floor lamps have always been known to tip over. Nowadays there is a standard that contemporary floor lamps must meet call the UL “tipability” standard. This means that the floor lamp you are buying has a much heavier base and there is less danger of it falling over and landing, say, on a sofa cushion and setting it on fire.

Yet another feature of floor lamps that made them dangerous for years was the cords. The cords were made of cloth and easily caught fire with the slightest of power surges. Nowadays floor lamps are made with a plastic zip cord rather than the old cloth cords. The old cloth cords also used to fray and it was much easier for an animal or child to chew through them or get accidentally shocked just by touching it.

The fact that most antique lamps do not have a standardized non-tippable base or a safe electrical cord is why you are probably better off to buy a new floor lamp then one from an antique store. It is just safer.

Yet another reason is that the very old floor lamps attached their lampshades through a wire clamp that was attached to the shade itself. This style of clamp for attaching light bulbs is also obsolete.

However if you do find the floor lamp of your dreams there is no reason why you can’t take it to an electrician or antique dealer to see what can be done to refurbish it. This is done all of the time to recycle old floor lamps. It is probably a good idea not to try and rewire an old lamp yourself unless you

are an experienced electrician.

Although rewiring an old floor lamp is easy, making sure the base is stable is not. All it takes is one wild child or unruly dog to tip it over and you could have a fire on your hands.

Floor lamps come in an incredible number of styles nowadays including all of the retro looks that you would find in an antique store and all of the more contemporary styles. As you browse online to shop for floor lamps it is quite common to find them in every style imaginable including Mission, Seventies Retro, Tiffany, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Country, Late Victorian and Gas. You can also find modern Swedish

styles that include shades shaped like upside down frying pans and large metallic mixing bowls.

Nowadays floor lamps come in every type of finish and shade including glass, porcelain and brushed metal and there are some very unique, beautiful and interesting contemporary floor lamps, as well as the more traditional styles, around.

How to Find a Nice Table Lamp

Saturday, April 11th, 2009
Elaine Edwards asked:

One of the most common varieties of lamps that we see in the household is the table lamp. They are ideal for students, who are studying at night.

Table lamps may be used during nighttime, but these also serve as a design to your room. They are ideal on tables and has evolved from simple to more intricate designs. Modern table lamps come with a variety of additional features and fixtures. Some are for decoration while others have specific purposes and functions. Some table lamps can also be placed in different positions for optimum lighting on a particular surface.

The lamps are usually covered with designer lampshades. These lampshades are decorated with glass pieces, paintings, beads, shells, and some embroidery.

The lamps come in several categories to suit your desires and tastes. They come in different designs, forms, colors, sizes. This will all depend on where exactly you will put the lamp shade. The height and size of the table lamp would also matter.

Uncommon Common Sense

If you choose properly, table lamps, although the most common home fixtures, can add character and style to your space. In choosing a table lamp, there are some things you have to consider. But the rule of thumb is to imagine how the lamp is going to be used.

If it will be used only for decoration, be on the lookout for lamps that complement your home and the furnishings inside it. Take the time to do this because complementary parts make for a dazzling whole.

If your room is elegantly designed, traditional lamps are the best buys to accessorize. This type of lamp makes for a romantic ambiance, and a relaxed one, because it gives out a dim, soft and even sensual light.

There many traditional table lamps and they come in different designs and styles. But most popular are finished in antique bronze, marble, brass, gold, and wood. The price of a lampshade actually depends on the finish of a product, although size also goes into the consideration for the price.

The average cost of table lamps ranges from $90 to $150 and it depends on the intricacy of the design and the material used. In general, the more intricate it is, the more expensive. Table lamps made of hand-carved wood and etched metal generally cost more.

Does the size matter when buying a table lamp? Yes it does, depending on where the lamp is located. If they are on side tables, do make sure that your table lamp does not exceed three feet. You certainly don’t want the table lamp to stick out like a sore thumb on the table.

If the place of your decoration is for a bigger table, buy something that’s just below four feet. If the place of your lamp is in the kitchen, find something that stands over two feet.

Some people will contend that the height of a table lamp is just a matter of taste. The truth is that, decorating a room sensibly requires some sense of aesthetics.
