Many lamps say not to use more than a 60 watt bulb. Is it okay to use a higher watt compact fluorescent?

Most of the compacts don’t seem to be as bright as incandescent, as others have noted. But is it safe to up the wattage in a lamp that has this warning? Thanks for any insight on the wattage relationship between bulb types.
