Flashing main lamps on airplane, did they mean anything ?

I live under the approach to EMA, last night while out driving I saw a plane about the size of a 737 coming into land, maybe 5 miles out, and both its main forward pointing lamps (what on a car we would call headlamps) were coming on then switching straight off when they got to full intensity, flashing on then off continuously.

Can anyone answer, were they simply malfunctioning, or is this some visible warning signal used in aviation ? Never seen it before. Thanks in advance !
