Does anyone have one of those waterfall dolphin lamps from WalMart?

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008
sfranklin asked:

The lamp has oil in it that runs down strings and makes it look as if there is a waterfall around the dolphin. Does anyone know what kind of oil you have to buy to put in it?

What is the difference between studio lamps and a lamp that i can buy from a hard ware store?

Monday, November 24th, 2008
paul p asked:

I would like to make a budget studio for photography for freinds and family. Is there any difference between buying a studio lamp from a photography wholesaler and goingto my local hardware store and getting the bits to build my own one? Im on a tight budget and want to play around but to be honest am not entirely sure what i would like to spend my money on. I have a couple of umbrellas at the moment and a reflector.

Use Leather Lamp Shades To Enhance Western Home Decorating

Saturday, November 22nd, 2008
Craig Chambers asked:

Use leather lamp shades for southwestern decorating and design style. The use of natural rustic shades has grown in the past few years as decorators have realized how simple it is to create southwestern and Native American style in any room, by simply using a natural lamp shade as part of the interior decorating.

The popular design you encounter throughout the southwest and in home magazines can be readily copied by just replacing the lamp shades on lamps you already use, or by placing them on specially designed rustic lamps like wooden and antler lamps. Leather lamp shades are available in a natural color and are also dyed in many colors including brown, wine, gold, red, green, and black that look amazing and are easy to use with any color scheme.

The thing I like most about rustic lamp shades is their versatility and the way they enhance western style. These hand-crafted, rustic shades are fashioned out of soft pigskin, suede leather that creates a nice glow when illuminated and has a beautiful rustic finish with tiny natural hair follicle holes.

Perfect for filtering light both upward and outward, leather lamp shades are great for use on desk lamps, table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, wall sconces, antler lamps and all rustic lamps. It doesn’t matter if you wish to light a big area using floor lamps or other rustic lamps, or are just trying to brighten a dark area with table lamps or rustic lamps, leather lamp shades provide the best lighting effect in lighting your home.

You will like the welcoming light of rustic lamps shades and the inviting warmth they add to your home when using them together with other southwestern style decorating accessories like Native American tapestries and American Indian hand crafts or with rustic furniture. Choosing where you will use the lamp shade is one of the most important things to figure out before purchasing. Big lamp shades that give off more light are great for reading and illuminating a large area, while smaller shades work well for accent lamps or illuminating a small area.

Leather lamp shades used on desk lamps or accent lamps can make a huge transformation and bring authentic Native American style to any area. Whether used with traditional style lamps or on special rustic lamps, leather lamp shades are the perfect way to incorporate the country look that you love. The wonderful versatility of western leather lamp shades makes them wonderful for use in any room or area where you would enjoy adding Native American style.

They also look great in rustic style homes and are the best way to bring out the natural beauty of its surroundings. Today, it is easy to buy leather lamp shades online or purchase them in shops that sell Native style decorating accessories. If you enjoy rustic design in home decor, and wish to bring out the spirit of the old west in your home decorating, try using the unique beauty of rustic leather lamp shades for your home design.

The Right Type Of Lamp For Your Room

Tuesday, November 18th, 2008
Joe Goertz asked:

It’s almost impossible to walk through a home and not see at least one lamp. Lamps are an integral part of home décor and with all of the different types of lamps available everyone can find one that meets their design and lighting needs.

One of the most popular types of lamps is the table lamp. Table lamps are lighting fixtures that are designed to be placed on top of a flat surface. There are many types of lamps that fit into the table lamps category. These include contemporary, candlestick, and trophy lamps. Although all of these types of lamps are considered to be table lamps they are each unique in their own sense of style.

For instance a candlestick lamp normally has a circular base with a tall thin body attached. On top of that body sits a lampshade. Many of these types of lamps have a swivel feature, which means you can move the lamp either to the right or the left depending on where you place it. Many people really enjoy the elegant appearance of this type of lamp.

Other types of lamps that fall into the table lamp category are artistic table lamps. This type of lamp is especially unique incorporating your lighting needs with works of art. You can purchase artistic table lamps that feature different metals as part of the base including iron or bronze. Although these tend to be a bit more expensive than a standard table lamp you should look at them as an investment in not only the lighting of your room but in art as well.

There are also types of lamps that are designed to be placed on the floor. These are called floor lamps and their height normally indicates that’s what they are.

Floor lamps are especially nice for a room where light is needed in a specific corner. These types of lamps can produce enough light to fill a room but some are designed to be spotlights, focusing the beam of light on one area. For people who enjoy reading they often employ the use of this type of lamp. The lamp is placed directly behind their chair and the light shines down allowing them to read without eye strain.

These types of lamps are also available in many different styles. A few examples are a goose neck floor lamp, a tiffany floor lamp, and an adjustable arm floor lamp.

With adjustable arm types of lamps the lighting fixture can be moved as needed. This makes a great investment because these types of lamps can be used in several different locations in the home. Many people purchase a lamp with the intention of using it in a particular space and this can become frustrating if you decide to change the style of the room and the lamp no longer has a space.

Children also have their own types of lamps. Lamps designed for children in mind are a fun way to add light to your child’s room. These types of lamps come in styles for boys and girls. Current cartoon characters, clowns and animals are a few of the different choices available.

As your child grows there are other types of lamps you’ll want to consider for their bedrooms. One is a desk lamp. Desk lamps are a wonderful addition to a child’s room as they begin school. The desk lamp allows extra light while they tend to homework and studying.

It’s obvious that there are types of lamps for every room of your home. They fit into every décor and every budget.

Southwestern Lamps Enhance Decorative Rustic Homes

Monday, November 17th, 2008
Craig Chambers asked:

Southwestern lamps add great authentic design to rustic decor. Southwestern decor is a great choice for any home, but it does present its own set of problems, especially when it comes time to choosing the right lighting fixtures. But, lighting a rustic style home is actually easier than you think! Use western lamps that complement the rustic design you wish to create.

Sometimes you will discover southwestern lamps for sale in lamp stores, but you will have a greater chance of finding a wide selection to choose from online. The greatest part about choosing from these rustic lamps online is the freedom you have to customize your style when it comes to your home decor. With various rustic lamps to choose from, you will certainly find the right lamp to go with your rustic decorating.

When buying a rustic lamp for your ranch style home you will need to determine whether you will need a classic style lamp like an iron lamp, or if a decorative lamp such as an antler lamp or pottery lamp would better suit your needs. The lighting fixtures you use in your interior design, really depend on whether you are using them in a more elaborate rustic home or are just trying to generate a relaxed country look. Metal lamps with rawhide lamp shades, for example, are very refined, and are fabulous accent lighting when placed on beside tables.

If you are searching for a western style lamp that not only works well as a functional lamp, but also really enhances southwestern decor, log furniture or Native drum tables, then a one of a kind antler lamp is definitely the best choice. Genuine deer antlers found over the course of the season, provide the beautiful antlers used in constructing these terrific lamps and add a touch of rustic style to any room of your home.

Decorative Indian pottery is another fantastic way you can create Native American style in your home. A great option for pottery enthusiasts is a lamp made out of a real clay pot, hand-coiled by the Tarahumara Indians of the Sierra Madre Mountains in Northern Mexico.

After determining which kind of southwestern lamp best fits your decorating needs, whether an iron, antler or pottery lamp, you can then add more southwestern accessories. This will pull the look together and create the western style home you have always dreamed of.

The part you will enjoy most about decorating with western lamps is that they can be used in different parts of your home to create great southwestern design. No matter if your goal is simply to add a little Native American style to a living room, or if you are taking on a bigger task of decorating an entire home or cabin, you will love how you can succeed in creating authentic rustic design style by decorating with southwestern lamps.

How come street lamps go out when you walk under them?

Monday, November 17th, 2008
Lame Name Dame asked:

That used to happen to me often, usually with one particular lamp in the street rather than in a random fashion.

I suppose it could be the interaction between the lamp and one’s electrical field, but I’d love to have a detailed explanation, if there is one. How come sodium lights are so sensitive to interference?

Joanne

Tiffany Style Lamps: a Significance of Class

Friday, November 14th, 2008
Elaine Edwards asked:

Tiffany-style lamps used to be just the domain of the rich and they were, in fact, symbols of wealth. These days, however, these lamps are found in the homes of the middle class as exquisite decorations.

Original Tiffany Lamps

Louis Comfort Tiffany, founder of Tiffany & Co., made the first Tiffany lamp in 1899. Tiffany had developed a technique of creating stained glass. He created his lamps with stained glass that were formed then into mosaics. Tiffany’s first customers were rich families who desire great decoration pieces for their homes. Production was at its peak from 1895 to 1920.

Today, however, you can find many of them Tiffany-style lamps, which are essentially knock offs of the same, very expensive, genuine Tiffany lamps.

Tiffany-Style Lamps

Tiffany-style lamps are by no means cheap. They are, in fact, expensive. But the real Tiffany lamps, however, are VERY EXPENSIVE. Some of the original Tiffany lamps that were made in the 1890s are now selling for as much as $8 million - and that doesn’t include the cost of having your Tiffany lamp authenticated by an antique dealer.

If you are trained in the different design movements, you can easily spot an original Tiffany from a Tiffany-style lamp by the modern-day design. If you have an untrained eye, however, you should better protect your investment by having it authenticated.

All Over The House And The Office

Tiffany-style lamps can be place anywhere in your home. The smaller lamps can be used to decorate your desk while the larger floor lamps can be used to light up a room in your room. Still, some lamps could be used to accent a formal dining room.

The impact of Tiffany-style lamps in the world is enormous, hence, many companies are producing these types of lamps. As if it wasn’t enough, they are even considered by some quarters as one of America’s greatest contributions to the world.

Tiffany-style lamps do not deviate so much from the original Tiffany lamps. They are still small-to-medium in size and they come in a variety of colors, color schemes and styles to match your tastes and complement the rest of your house or office. There is practically no limit to the creativity that has gone to the design of Tiffany-style lamps. They may make-up the mood of a room with their designs.

Choosing A Tiffany-Style Lamp

For their sheer beauty, it won’t be easy to choose a Tiffany-style lamp. That there are so many Tiffany-style lamps in different designs doesn’t really help. But choose the lamp that best attributes your whole room.

Tiffany-style lamps work best with excellent designed rooms because these create a relaxed and romantic ambience. The light that comes from them is soft and sensual too. When buying a lamp, be prepared to shell out your money. A tiffany-style mini-lamp can cost $66.95. Lamps in other shapes and sizes can cost several hundred dollars although there are some bargains that you can find out on the Internet.

In any case, a thing of beauty is always worth the price that you pay for.
