How Many Different Ways are There to Light a Portrait With Just One Light?

February 1st, 2010 | Posted in Lamps   Comments Off
John Wood asked:

An unabridged version of this article and others can be found at:  John’s Blog on ‘One Light’

Portrait photography? No problem! Just find a pretty girl, buy a flashgun, take her picture and hey presto you have a portrait. But is it any good?

So what makes the difference. Well, a number of things do; the model, the background, the pose, the camera, the space, the camera, the lens and the light. But take away light and you have NOTHING!

So what is it about light?

There is: hard and soft, bright and dim, small and big, white and white (yes white and white) as well as white and coloured, direct and reflected, fast and slow, front and side and back and high key and low key and last but not least, invisible!

One Light?: The truth is that there is usually more than one light because where there is light there usually is reflected light.

You can use this reflected light if it helps or insert gobo’s (black go between boards or flags) to stop this. You can increase the reflected light by using reflectors, expensive ones or shirts and white boards.

Hard and Soft: Simply the difference between the light on a sunny day and a cloudy day. Hard light gives dark well-defined shadows. Soft light comes from many different places.

Bright and Dim: A dim light to us can be made to look like daylight, simply by leaving the shutter open for longer. So in this respect there is no such thing as bright or dim light. That is defined by the camera settings. The camera can make the brightest of scenes look like it was taken during an eclipse!

Small and Big: The sun is the biggest light that we can use, however it is called a small light because it is so far away. But put the clouds in between us and the sun and it becomes the biggest light we can use.

Soft boxes turn small lights into big lights and are often 2-3ft across. Alternatives are to shoot through a white sheet or bounce off a wall. An umbrella can achieve a similar effect because it spreads the light all over the place and reflected light can soften the shadows.

White and White: To the human eye, white is clearly white; that is because the eyes is constantly adjusting and interpreting what it sees. Cameras are not able to do that to the same extent. Collect different sheets of white paper and take a close look at them - you will probably find quite a range of whites. The same variations apply to light. We would call them all white (non coloured) but in reality they are coloured or tinted in some small way.

Different lights produce different tints - fluorescent give a greenish light, incandescent give a orange tint, flash guns and strobes will tend not to have a tint; so whites look white to our eyes but some appear coloured to a camera.

White and Coloured: Taking a photograph indoors with flash and incandescent bulbs will give a mixture of white and orange tints.

I was taking an outdoor photo during the day with a deeply overcast day. I place two flashguns with orange gels and the photograph turned from a dull picture to one that looked as though it had been taken late in the evening with a lovely warm glow.

Placing coloured gels over a flashgun colours the light and will produce different effects. Quality street sweets are famous for providing different colour wrappers that can be used for different effects.

Direct and Reflected: Direct light comes from your source light and usually has an obvious effect. Reflected light will come from any other surface that is not totally black. A coloured wall will give the light a colour tint. A shiny surface will give a hard strong light. A textured surface will give a soft weak light.

The distance from the source to the reflecting surface and then to the subject, compared to the distance from the source light to the subject, will greatly affect the strength of the reflected light.

Fast and Slow: What I am really referring to is the duration of the light, ie how long the light is shining while the photograph is being taken.

Daylight shines 100% of the time the shutter is open and a flashgun can shine for 1% of the time. In most cases though, you will get a combination of two lights; one shining 100% and the other a fraction of the time.

Front, Side and Rear: Choose the position of the main light. Each position will create a very different effect, from fully lit to silhouette. Reflected light can be used to fill in shadows.

Low and High Key: This is were the tones of the photograph are primarily dark or bright. The details of the subject are either blown out or in deepest shadow. Often the form comes from the outline of the subject. This is achieved by under or over exposing the subject.

Invisible: Infra Red is not visible to the naked eye, but filters can be attached to a camera which allows that light to be picked up on the sensor or film. This can produce a surreal effect. Different surfaces reflect different amounts of infra-red.

So there we have it, a lightening, fast pass over variations with just one light.

All this with just one light; just think of the variations with two or more lights.

Explore my website to see some of these effects in practice in the Galleries. Explore making your own photographs with just one light. Explore, discover and understand.

What kind of photography lighting would be good for indoor fashion shots?

January 21st, 2010 | Posted in Lamps   Comments Off
Obsequies asked:

I’m not new, but not exactly very good with photography. To a point I can do it. I’ve been taking photos of clothing I make outside for the summer, and have been quite pleased with the turnout. However, winter is just around he corner and I need to take photos inside.
I’m looking for lighting tips for indoor photography. I take indoor fashion shots and need something that gives me decent light. Not regular lighting that makes everything look yellow/orange.
Also, There are not many windows here so light from outside is limited.
Any help would be GREALY appreciated.
Thanks.

The 107 Club, Crawley, Sussex, UK - Sound & Lighting Installation

January 11th, 2010 | Posted in Lamps   Comments Off
Showtec Lighting & Sound asked:

When we first visited the site for the 107 Club it was simple an empty shell. It was difficult to picture how it would be transformed into a fully functioning sussex nightclub, but after three months of hard work the venue opened its doors to the public with great success.

The brief was straightforward: High quality sound and an impressive nightclub lighting show to match.

The 107 Club’s Sound System

Starting with the sound system, we opted for a sound system by Funktion One. Renowned for their high quality and visually impressive systems, we felt that Funktion One would offer the most suitable system for the venue. On the dancefloor the sound system comprised of four Funktion One Res2SH speakers flown from the ceiling, with two Funktion One F221 twin 21” bass bins. The Funktion One Res2SH speakers offer a fairly narrow dispersion, which allowed us to concentrate the sound on the dancefloor area, without spilling out too much into the bar areas. The speakers were powered by two MC² amplifiers, the E25 and E45. These were in turn controlled by an XTA DP424 system processor and an XTA C2 compressor limiter, with a Formula Sound FF6000 mixer in the DJ booth.

The peripheral sound (surround in-fill system) was slightly more complex, with 7 additional separately defined areas. Firstly, there were four individual VIP rooms, each requiring its own volume control. For these a Bose system was specified, giving a high sound quality from compact enclosures. The first three rooms utilised the Bose DS100 surface mount speakers, with the last room having a Bose Freespace 3 system. Each room was also fitted with a Cloud RL1 remote volume control unit, allowing the customers to control the volume in their own room’s independently.

Next were the upstairs and downstairs bars, and the secondary dancefloor. For these areas we opted for a number of (EV) Electrovoice ZX1 speakers. Powered by QSC GX3 and GX5 amplifiers, these speakers offered a perfect solution of good quality but not overpowering sound for the peripheral areas.

The 107 Club’s Nightclub Lighting System

Moving on to the lighting system, we had the challenge of creating something impressive but unique, in order to give the venue a way of standing head and shoulders above its competitors. With its fairly high roof, the 107 Club was a perfect candidate for an LED ceiling. After a few discussions and alterations, it was decided that we would construct the custom LED matrix to run the whole length of the ceiling, and down one of the walls, opposite the DJ box. Covering a total area of 90 square metres, this would provide one of the most impressive nightclub lightshows in the area.

The ceiling itself was made up of 1850 RGB LEDs, covering the 18m long and 5m wide area. Each of the LEDs is individually controllable, allowing us to create an almost infinite array of patters, graphics and effects. Within the area of the LED ceiling, we also fitted a number of conventional nightclub lighting effects to add even more impact to the lightshow. These comprised of 8 Robe ClubSpot 300 CT moving heads, and 8 Martin Atomic 3000 strobes. Also added were two custom UK built 300mW green lasers, a Martin Club Fog system and a Martin AF-1 fan to distribute the smoke. To light the stage area, two Robe ClubWash 300 CT moving heads were fitted, and two additional Robe ClubSpot 300 CTs were placed over the secondary dancefloor. Peripheral LED lighting was also added, with 48 Octostip LED battons placed in the bar area and edging the balcony.

Control for the lighting was provided by a computer based software system, eCue. This gave us the flexibility to program the entire system on the one computer, with different areas being able to be controlled separately. It also gave us the ability to run graphics and low resolution video on the LED ceiling. The DMX was outputted using seven eCue Butler devices, giving us a total of fourteen universes of DMX.

To finish off a visual system was added comprising of three LCD projectors running from a computer loaded with Arkaos Midi. Two custom screens were constructed at the edges of the dancefloor, while a third electrically controlled rear projection screen was suspended at the edge of the dancefloor. This allowed the venue to close off a section of the club by lowering the screen and using it as a divider. As a rear projection screen was used, it allowed customers both sides of the divider to see the visuals and graphics being projected.

Finally

Overall, the finished product was just as impressive as we had hoped. All elements worked together to create a complete clubbing experience, with a new high standard being set for what is expected of the late night industry.

See The 107 Club’s Website.

Outdoor Wall Lighting – They Have What You Want

January 10th, 2010 | Posted in Lamps   Comments Off
Barbara Tobiasz asked:

I was talking to a friend of mine the other day. Her name is Shirley. Shirley is a retired nurse whose husband passed away a few years ago. She lives by herself in a three bedroom brick ranch home a few miles away from me. We met about five years ago when I was doing some volunteer work at the local hospital where Shirley worked.

Every now and then we have Shirley over for dinner. She loves to bake and she always brings something that she baked for desert when we get together. I have to admit that she is a great cook.

When Shirley came over for dinner the other day, we were sitting around the dinner table and she brought up something that she knew I could help her out with. She was explaining how at night when she is at home and has to go outside that it was difficult for her to see her way around her house.

You see, Shirley likes to water her lawn and gardens at night. She went on to say that watering after sundown is better for her lawn and garden, because the water has does not evaporate at the surface as quickly as it does in sunlight. This gives her lawn and gardens a better drink of water, as she put it.

What Shirley was leading up to was some sort of advice for lighting up the outside of her home at night. She wanted to be able to see better and not worry about stepping on her flowers while watering.

The first thought that came to me was outside wall lighting. So I asked Shirley if she had any outside wall lighting on her house now. She said she did have a few outside wall lights, but over the years they just stopped working.

So I asked her where these non-working outside wall lights were located. She said she had one on each side of the overhead door of her garage. One wall light on the outside wall along side of her front door and two more outside wall lights on the back wall of her home where her bar-b-q deck is.

She said her main concern was along both sides of her house and not so much the front and rear walls of her home, but that she could replace the old worn outside wall lights that are already there and not operating.

After dinner my husband and Shirley went into our living room to watch some TV. I went off to do some research on Outside Wall Lighting.

My next thoughts were what style of outside wall lighting would go with her light tan brick home. I went to work. Shirley had white vinyl windows around her home, so I was determined to find a style to go with the flow, as they say.

The first outside wall lights I looked at were to replace the lights that were already on her home. For the garage, on both sides of the overhead door, I found the Alexandria White Energy Star Outdoor Wall Light. This wall lamp has a white finish, curved beveled glass, die cast aluminum construction and a motion sensor. These lights will turn automatically on when you pull into the driveway with your car. Also, these lights will automatically turn on when you walk in front of them in your driveway.

Next, I took a look at the outdoor wall lighting fixture on the wall next to her front door. Here I was thinking that the Traditional Estate White Energy Star Outdoor Wall Light or the Richmond Coach White Energy Star Outdoor Wall Light are good choices to pick from. Here Shirley could choose the wall lighting fixture she liked best.

So now I’m thinking about Shirley’s outdoor wall lighting on the back wall of he home lighting up her bar-b-q deck. Here I came up with the Chesapeake One Light Outdoor Wall Lantern in White. This award winning outdoor wall lighting fixture consists of an aluminum body, white finish, clear beveled glass, suitable for wet locations and a beautiful traditional style. Shirley is sure to be pleased with this wall lamp.

Now for the final part of this project, the two side walls of Shirley’s house. If you remember, here is where she wanted enough light so when she waters her lawn and garden at night, she won’t step in her flower gardens.

Then it came to me. On the side walls of Shirley’s house there are presently no outdoor wall lights. Also, there is no electrical wiring running to these walls to hook up any hard wired outdoor wall lighting fixtures.

The answer to this situation came to me. Here the only solution to lighting up the areas surrounding the outside side walls of her home is solar powered outdoor wall lighting. Here all you have to do is simply attach the lighting fixture to the outside wall and let nature do the rest.

I went to work. It didn’t take long before I found a variety of solar powered outdoor wall lighting fixtures. The choices ranged from decorative to flood lighting. I thought to myself that all Shirley really needed to brighten up her outside side walls of her home is a flood light positioned up high in the middle of these two walls. One solar powered wall mounted flood light on the left wall and one on the right wall of her house.

I found the solution to her night lighting problem. It was the Solar System Double Head Flood Light. Put these double headed solar powered flood lights up high enough on each of the walls. Aim them on a downward angle to the left and right and these outdoor wall mounted lights will be able to light the way at night for Shirley.

When my research was finished, notebook computer in hand, I sat down on the living room couch next to Shirley. I presented her with the outdoor wall lighting solutions I found and she was excited. I offered to help her with the installation after she received her shipments of outside wall lighting. This put a smile on her face.

Hard wired or solar powered, you can install outdoor wall lighting in places that you never imagined possible years ago. Now you have the ability to light up the darkness and see the light anywhere you please.

Types of Commercial Lighting Fixtures

December 29th, 2009 | Posted in Lamps   Comments Off
Kimberly Quang asked:

American-made Commercial Lighting fixtures feature the highest commercial grade lighting fixtures in all major light sources used for building exterior, site lighting, security lighting, warehouse interior lighting, roadway lighting, and security lighting systems. Contractors and end-users benefit from a great freedom of choice when working with RLLD Commercial Lighting. As a multi-manufacturer representative, we maintain an objective stance toward brand and technology type, working through a nation wide distribution network that is quota free from our standpoint. This means that we will never insist that any company or individual buy a particular product from us to fulfill obligatory demands of our vendor status. On the contrary, we actually extend vendor privileges to our clients by allowing sole proprietor designers and electricians direct access to the relationships we enjoy with the world’s top manufactures and giving them access to pricing and shipping services that smaller companies and individuals may not be able to obtain on their own.

Clients of US distributors like RLLD Commercial lighting can thus obtain fixtures of any type, size, intensity, and design simply by contacting and RLLD lighting specialist and placing an order directly through our distribution network. Our growing inventory offers the following to contractors, end users, architects, and building developers nationwide.

Incandescent

Although incandescent lamps are more frequently used in residential lighting applications, some commercial lighting fixtures also used this technology. Incandescent lamps pass current through a filament, which causes the filament to give off light. Because they are relatively short lived, incandescents are used mostly as decorative commercial lighting fixtures. Their ability to render warm colors effectively without ballast makes them well suited to this application, and the enormous variety of bulb designs make them highly soft after source of any type of accent lighting or decorum based commercial lighting design.

Fluorescent

Fluorescent lamps are used extensively in commercial lighting fixtures for a number of reasons. First and foremost of these reasons is their ability to use less power than other commercial lighting fixtures, making them very cost effective from an energy conservation perspective. Fluorescent bulbs also produce a very bright light that is evenly distributed, making them ideal commercial warehouse lighting fixtures, canopy lights, security lights, in interior retail lights in discount stores where high levels of general lighting help psychologically motivate larger bulk purchases of discount merchandise.

Fluorescent bulbs produce light by activating phosphors on the interior of the bulb using ultraviolet energy generated by a mercury arc. Ballast helps start and operate the fluorescent lamps by regulating electron flow through the gaseous arc. Trends in fluorescent technology have made them more compact, increasing lumens per watt efficiency as high as 100 lumens per watt, and reducing the amount of toxic mercury within the bulbs interior. Fluorescent commercial lighting fixtures are best deployed underneath building eaves (as in the case of canopy lights), near loading docks, in wallpacks on the sides of buildings, or as large grocery store or warehouse lights. Placing them too far out into open spaces tends to diffuse their light output and diminish their intensity.

High Intensity Discharge (HID) Commercial Lighting Fixtures

HID stands for High Intensity Discharge. It refers to a technology where light is produced by a gaseous arc discharge using a variety of elements. Typical elements include mercury vapor, metal halide, and high pressure sodium. The arc tube within an HID lamp will contain one or more of such elements, and when current passes between the electrodes at either end of the tube, the current creates an arc that generates visible light.

HID lamps feature the highest efficiency in lumens per watt output and also feature a greater level of lighting control. They also last longer than other commercial lighting fixtures, making them a wise investment for a company on a Spartan budget that cannot afford to continually replace equipment.

High intensity discharge sources include mercury vapor, metal halide, and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps. Light is produced in HID and low pressure sodium (LPS) sources through a gaseous arc discharge using a variety of elements. Each HID lamp consists of an arc tube which contains certain elements or mixtures of elements which, when an arc is created between the electrodes at each end, gasify and generate visible radiation.

Light Sources and Lamp Characteristics:

Mercury Vapor (MV)

Mercury vapor lights were the first HID commercial lighting fixtures developed. They were designed originally to meet a rising demand for a very compact, high output, and energy efficient source of light. They are used extensively in a number of landscape lighting applications, being commonly deployed as tree lights in high-end commercial outdoor lighting systems. In other applications they have proven somewhat less effective duo to their inferior color rendering abilities, although this has improved to a certain extent over the years by phosphor coated interior bulb walls.

The life of mercury vapor lamps is good, averaging 24,000 hours for larger wattage lamps. However, because the output diminishes so greatly over time, economical operational life is often much shorter. Efficacy ranges from 30 to 60 lumens per watt, with the higher wattages being more efficacious than the lower wattages.

As with other HID lamps, the starting of a mercury vapor lamp is not immediate. Starting time is short, though, taking 4-7 minutes to achieve maximum output depending upon the ambient temperature.

High Pressure Sodium (HPS)

High Pressure Sodium (HPS) commercial lighting fixtures gained huge popularity in the 1970’s to meet the needs of a powerful, yet super efficient, source of HID lighting. Lumens per watt output in an HPS lamp can be as high as 140 lumens per watt-approximately 7 times the luminance as incandescent lamps and twice that of MV or Fluorescent. They also last for approximately 24,000 hours—the longest lamp light on the market.

The problem with HPS commercial lighting fixtures has always been the quality of light they create. HPS lamps give off a yellowish or orange-tinted color and are not acceptable light sources for situations where illuminating a brand, architectural keynote, or any type of ornate exterior landscaping requires a high level of color rendering. For the most part, they are used in applications such as commercial parking garage lighting, warehouse lighting, and certain outdoor applications such as security flood lighting.

Metal Halide (MH)

Metal Halide (MH) commercial lighting fixtures are fast becoming the preferred source of HID lighting in most commercial environments. This is because they produce a very bright white light that nearly equivalent to daylight in its color rendering ability. The variety of applications is significant as a result, ranging from decorative street lighting, commercial parking lot lighting, car lot lighting, outdoor landscape lighting, architectural lighting, security lighting, and general site lighting. Traditionally, their biggest drawback has been their short lamp life-only 7,500 hours on the average.

Newer designs in Metal Halide commercial lighting fixtures include pulse start technology and ceramic metal halide design. These improvements have increased lumens per watt efficiency, control of the light itself through superior dimmability, better stability of color rendering, longer lamp life, and shorter start time.

Unfortunately, recent legislation has called for the phase out of certain standard forms of MH commercial lighting fixtures due to their use of incendiary elements that fall under the classification of greenhouse gas sources. This in turn paves the way for the most sophisticated lighting ever developed on our world, and quite possibly, the singular source of lighting used both commercially and residentially in the very near future: LED commercial lighting fixtures.

LED Commercial Lighting Fixtures

As technology improves, the ability to create truly “white” led light continues to evolve. LED commercial lighting fixtures are featuring higher lumens per watt efficiencies than their initial prototypes initially offered. This has opened the door for a number of architectural lighting and site lighting applications that were previously the exclusive domain of HID commercial lighting fixtures.

We are also seeing an upsurge in the use of led commercial lighting fixtures in street and roadway lighting, where a number of municipalities in the United States and Europe have reported some very promising findings in regards to both power cost reduction and the overall quality of street lighting itself.

Look for quarterly leaps and bounds in the engineering gains made by LED commercial lighting fixture manufacturers, and be sure to sign up for our RLLD Commercial Lighting Newsletter which will feature news updates and case studies about this exciting and revolutionary technology.

Safety Instructions For Christmas Lights

Joe Willmeth asked:

Christmas Light Safety Instructions:

When using Christmas lights, basic precautions should always be observed including the following holiday light safety tips;

Your holiday lights are not toys! To avoid risk of fire, burns, personal injury and electric shock, the holiday lights should not be played with or placed where small children can reach them.

Do not use Christmas lights outdoors unless the lights are marked suitable for outdoor use. When outdoor Christmas lights are used in outdoor applications, connect the outdoor Christmas lights to a ground fault circuit interrupting [GFCI] electrical three pronged outlet.

Seasonal holiday lights are not intended for permanent installation or use. Store all holiday lights in a dry cool storage area.

Do not mount or place Christmas lights near gas or electric heaters, fireplaces, candles or other similar sources of heat.

Do not secure the holiday light sets with staples or nails since they could damage the protective wire coating.

Do not place the wire on sharp objects.

Do not let the holiday light bulbs rest on the lights supply cord or on any other electrical wire.

Unplug the Christmas light bulbs when retiring for the night or if the lights are left unattended. You can use an approved three pronged plug timer to turn your lights On and Off so you do not have to unplug your lights.

To reduce the risk of fire or electrical shock, do not mount or support the Christmas lights in a manner that can cut or damage the light sets.

Do not close your doors or windows on the Christmas lights or extension cords as this may damage the protective wire insulation.

When the lights are in use do not cover the Christmas holiday light bulbs with cloth, paper or any material not part of the light set.

Only use United States UL approved 110 / 120 volt Christmas lights.

If your Christmas lights are equipped with push-in type light bulbs, do not twist the holiday light bulbs. Pull the bulbs straight out of the light bulb socket.

To reduce the risk of overheating, replace any burned out light bulbs promptly. Make sure you use the same volt and wattage replacement light bulbs.

Always unplug your Christmas lights before installing or replacing the light bulbs.

Do not overload the electrical wiring of the holiday lights. Only connect the recommended amount of party light sets [usually three sets if not stated in instructions] on one continuous light string.

To avoid the risk of fire, do not replace the factory light plug. The factory plug contains a safety device (fuse) that should not be removed. Discard the holiday light set if the plug is damaged.

Always read the manufacture’s complete use and care instructions for the holiday light bulbs.

Safety Tips For Lights With Overload Fuses:

A blown fuse indicates an overloaded circuit and you need to reduce the amount of lights connected to the circuit. A blown fuse may also be caused by a short-circuit. The Christmas light set with a short-circuit should be discarded. Always unplug your lights before installing or replacing the light fuses. To avoid the risk of a fire, replace the blown fuses with like amp and volt fuses.
